Blog 16

As I wrap up my blogging sessions I thought for my last one I would give an all opinionated blog of my viewpoint on reality television. I had fun writing these blogs and sharing information about reality television over the course of the semester, I really hope you enjoyed reading some facts and all the rumors that we are always dying to know about! I also would like to say I enjoyed reading everybody’s blogs; they were all well written and interesting topics.
I’m going to start out with what bugs me the most on reality television shows. I really can’t stand all the reality shows about love and finding love and blah blah blah! You cannot not go on TV and find someone within a month the person you want to be with for the rest of your life, it’s crazy and definitely not plausible but these people somehow like to think that love can only be found on TV. The girls on some of these shows really irk me. Whenever I’m watching a reality show about love, the girls are always bawling telling the cameras how much she loves this guy or even another girl.
I would have to say one of my favorite reality shows would be Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. I really enjoy watching this show because there are no fake people involved and it’s for a great cause. Ty and the others are helping families in desperate need of a new home. They get sent on a vacation which normally they can’t afford while the group and families in the neighborhood help redo the entire house. They have 7 days to completely fix up the house. I think I also enjoy watching the show is because the finish product of the houses are incredibly nice, and I have always loved to go to open house and see different house with the interior decorating.
I have a mixture of feelings towards reality TV shows, there are some that are great and there are some that should never be seen again. Hope you all enjoyed this semester!

Blog 15

This week’s blog I decided to talk about reality shows that are trying to find these people love. The amount of reality shows based on love is ridiculous; you can’t meet someone for the first time and know each other for about what like a month? And believe you are in love with them.
Age of love, it plays on NBC but I have never seen or heard of it. It actually started about two years ago. There are so many reality shows out there helping people find love I can’t keep track of them anymore. The reality television show “Age of love” has a male contestant looking for love with girls either in their 20’s or 40’s. They classify the younger women as the kittens and the older women as the cougars. The first season of Age of love featured tennis star Mark Philippoussis who was 30 years old while on the show. He ended up choosing one of the “kittens.” Another show that is totally off the wall is “A shot of love with Tila Tequila.” Tila has both female and males trying to win her heart over. This is where women are getting bad names, like many of the videos we have watched in class, women are playing out with these party actions because they think that is what everyone wants. A knock off show of Tila Tequila is “A double Shot at Love” which is with twins that are both bisexual, and of course all the boys think this is “hot.” There are many many other shows that you have all heard about dealing with love. I think that these reality shows dealing with love is the most popular topics of reality. There are shows such as The Bachelor and Bachelorette, Bromance, Daisy of Love, Flavor of love, Mr. Romance and Perfect match and those are just a few.
I must admit I do watch some of these love reality shows. I think the only reason I watch them is because personally I find them hilarious, all these girls are completely head or heels for these guys that they barely know. Even the person picking one partner from about 20 others is outrageous. I think that if these people are going on these shows that there must be something wrong with them, like why can’t they date someone from around their city? Maybe it might just be to gain the fame, which most people are becoming famous from reality TV shows now; one word I have to say is crazy.

Blog 14

This week I have decided to look at Susan Boyle again. I got some interesting replies to my last post and I thought I would inform you guys with a little more information. From reading the replies from last week’s blog it was amazing how you all said that it was time for people to be non-judgmental towards other people that are maybe not as “pretty” as you. It is very true how if you don’t have the look there is a slim to no chance at all of becoming a star in Hollywood, and as we know every star has had all sorts of surgeries and other cosmetic features.
I was reading a recent news feed of reality TV, when I came across a story on Susan Boyle with the headlines “Scottish singing sensation gets dye job, makeover.” I found that really interesting because the only reason Susan Boyle was such a hit on “Britain’s Got Talent” was simply because of her appearance and how incredible her voice was. The whole story behind Boyle was to prove to people that it’s never all about looks. We can’t judge someone without knowing them. I know when Boyle first appeared on the show fans and even the judges were a little nervous about her singing but she blew them away with her unbelievable voice. I think that by Boyle getting this makeover could affect the way people feel about her, fans and judges. On Friday she appeared on the cover of The Sun tabloid with shaped eyebrows, dyed brown curly locks. The readers of The Sun quoted that is as far as she should go for her appearance change. They also quoted that “we want her to stay one of us, not get hair extensions and a fake tan.” Even the producers are saying that they need to keep her as natural as possible because it could jeopardize the connection Boyle shares with her audience as “being one of them.”
Coming up on May 23rd is the day were the British judges will decided whether Boyle gets to move onto the next round. I guess we will have to see how much the makeover will benefit or affect her negatively. I think by Boyle might even perform better by having a little more self esteem, hopefully this will help her move on in the next round. Hope you guys all enjoyed the post!

Blog 13

This week’s blog I thought I would discuss the story of Susan Boyle. Now I’m sure you have all heard of this lady. She had recently auditioned on the UK’s reality talent competition. Let’s just say Boyle is not the most stunning lady we have seen on reality television. You can definitely say Boyle has been a huge hit in our news recently. Most people dream about have an opportunity like this, still being able to get the chance to become famous while the “looks” are not there. Boyle has a quite interesting personality.
This 47 year old woman has been singing since she was 12 and has thought she has never really been given the chance to become famous with her singing, and now by appearing on Britain’s Got Talent, not only has she become famous with her singing but by her personality and the history of her life we could just say. Boyle has an amazing voice that the judges could not believe! She lives alone in a Scottish village and admitted on television that she had never been kissed. She lives alone with her cat Pebbles. Susan Boyle has become a worldwide hit after she appeared on the talent show on April 10th weekend, since then she has drawn 13 million viewers on you tube. Boyle’s mother who recently died at the age of 91 has always pushed her to appear on the show, and now that experience is paying off with how supportive all the fans have been she said.
In a way Boyle reminds me of Britain’s little Connie Talbot, who is just six years old but yet still had an amazing voice and become famous just by singing on the show, now how many 6 year olds could say they are famous and great singers?
Hope you enjoyed the post, and check out the links for some videos!!

This week I decided to talk about teenagers who are exposed to sexual contents on television at young ages. I think this is an extremely important topic to know and understand what is happening in our society today. Unplanned pregnancies and sexual transmitted diseases are mostly common among the teenagers who are already sexually active.
The average teenager watches 3 hours on TV daily. I found in a article that 65% of high school seniors have already had sexual intercourse, this is in reality a very young age especially compared to back in the day when talking about sex was not even an option. The part that I don’t understand is that we expose our young teenagers to shows such as CSI, Family Guy, Simpsons and Secret Life of an American Teenager. Also another thing is that it’s not only about sex in these shows but we have set times on these shows running them at times when these times are considered “family” television time.
During the years from 1999-2000, 68% of television contained sexual content while only a couple of shows showed demonstrated safety during sex. Many teenagers experimenting sex at a young age quote in later years that they wish they would have waited longer. I had found on a website that the younger teenagers try to act more mature. They think by acting older it’s okay for them to experience sexual activities. I found a site that has a list of shows that they believe are suitable and not suitable for young children.
TV is one of the greatest influences on today’s society. It is amazing how much children and young teenagers are picking up from only watching maybe an hour of television a day. I think we need to reexamine the content we are exposing our children and young viewers too. Children’s behaviors are highly affected by their role models, and in this case their role models are considered to be the television shows they are watching. Now what do you think? Do you think that we have too much sexual content too little or just the right amount.

I felt as if there has been a lot of recent interesting news in reality TV, so I have decided to all let you know some of the latest information. I have talked about Melissa Rycroft in other recent blogs but I just wanted to show that after appearing in a reality show she really hit the big screens. Let’s just say that Melissa Rycroft is a big hit in not only reality television but in all around public. After Rycroft was dumped by bachelor Jason Mesnick, she was asked to appear on another reality show “Dancing with the Star.” Now with recent news Melissa Rycroft is now asking to pose nude in men’s publications, she was offered $500 000. "Hef really wants Melissa to do a pictorial because she's the ultimate girl next door," a source told Star. "He thinks she has it all: beauty, brains and spunk. And it doesn't hurt that she has a terrific figure."
When it comes to “Jon and Kate plus 8” there may no longer be the camera side of things. The show has recently aired their fourth season finale when Jon was quoted on the show “Maybe we’ll be back, maybe we won’t” according to the Post. Jon had also told cameras that it has become very difficult being on the camera side of everything and not being able to be just “Jon” but he has to be “Jon and Kate plus 8.” Early February Jon was seen out at a bar located about 3 miles from his 1.3 million dollar home. “He was dirty dancing with several of them, making out, kissing them on their necks and mouths," a bystander told Star magazine. "I thought it was rather surprising for a father with his wife and so many kids at home to be acting like this. He was all over one girl, a long-haired blonde who's nearly 6-feet-tall. He left with several of the girls, including her." Now say if Jon was just a typical average male out at bar this would be a completely different story. This story would never hit paparazzi. This goes to show how about actual personal life you truly have, slim to none I would say. Although Jon has denied the stories and called them rumors and lies, him and his wife have been reported spending some alone time without the kids to “heal things.”
As I have been trying to mention to everything in my blogs is that once you have appeared on reality TV you really don’t have your own life or should I say private life?

This week’s blog I have decided to talk a little more about Jade Goody. Some of you may know who she is and some may not. She appeared on Big Brother season 3 becoming a star in reality television. Jade Goody has recently passed away Sunday March 22nd, 2009. "She will be remembered fondly by all who knew her and her family can be extremely proud of the work she has done to raise awareness of cervical cancer, which will benefit thousands of women across the UK." This was a direct quote from the BBC News online. Jade Goody is one of those stars that has been had a huge impact during and after her time on reality TV. She was actually diagnosed with cervical cancer while on the show in 2002. The disease had spread to her liver, groin and bowel when she was told it was very terminal February 2009. All she had wanted to do after hearing the terrible news was spend all the time she could with her husband Jack Tweed and her two boys, Bobby and Freddy. Goody died peacefully at home with all her family and close friends. Goody was in high hopes of educating our world about the risks of cancer and I think she has done a fantastic job. Cancer Research UK chief executive Harpal Kumar said: "Her brave battle with an aggressive form of cervical cancer has received widespread public attention and encouraged thousands of women to seek advice on how to prevent the disease. Here is a video clip of Goody talking and people talking about her. This is a true amazing story although it ended in grief I believe Goody is truly an inspirational person. It seems crazy just to think she only became famous and her story would have gone unnoticed if she had not appeared on season 3 of Big Brother.

This week’s blog I have decided to talk about the reality TV contestants that have made their life famous after appearing on these shows. It is really amazing to see how many people are appearing in magazines as news goes on in their life, you always hear things such as, remember the girl that was on the bachelorette or remember the guy that was in survivor doing this.
Recent news shows that Mike who is also known as “The Miz” from the Real World: Back to New York almost became the most successfully former reality TV cast member in terms of money. Mike was in the contest by WWE’s named “Tough Enough” and lost in the finals for a grand prize of one million dollars and a four year contract but he had lost. Although this is not the point, I wanted to just show you that if this guy was just any regular guy it wouldn’t have been a big deal. Many people become more famous after their reality TV time while many of the others fail at doing so. Just by appearing on reality television does not give you a guarantee of success. There are many other reality television contestants that have become famous such as, Richard Hatch, Kyle Brandt, Jacinda Barrett and our famous bachelorette winner Trista Rehn Sutter and Ryan Sutter.
Let’s look at our famous American Idol winners. Kelly Clarkson, one of the most famous pop singers today, started out with a simple tryout. We also have Kellie Pickler, Josh Gracin who are both famous country singer and Chris Daughtry who signs alternative rock. I also found a interesting fact that, Colbie Caillat who sings “Bubbly” and “Realize” had once tried out for American Idol but did not make it past the first round.
This just goes to show that you can become famous quite easily from appearing reality television, if you got some sort of talent or a good personality for these reality television shows you are pretty well shoe in. All you got to do is stand out among the crowd in auditions.

This week I have decided to blog about the recently heard news involving reality TV. There are always new “gossip” and rumors going around when it comes to reality television. I don’t know if any of you have heard yet but Nancy O’Dell and Jewell were suppose to be competing in Dancing with the Stars season 8 but has recently been suffering from a knee injury. A couple days ago it was reported that CMT’s “Hope and Faith” Kelly Ripa was going to O’Dell’s replacement for the show but now the rumor has already changed. Melissa Rycroft from the Bachelor who was recently dumped after being proposed to on national television by Jason Mesnick is now said to be one of the replacements due to O’Dell’s and Jewell’s knee injuries. Jewell’s replacement as the moment is former Playboy model and “Girls next door” star Holly Madison.
American Idol 8 decided to have a top 13 instead of the usual top 12 finalists. The judges decided to have a “Wild Card Round” to give the show a bit of a twist when they had surprised Ryan Anoop. You can find more information on the episode revealing the top 13 finalists of American Idol season 8.
The Hill’s star Lauren Conrad told US Weekly that she will be leaving the show. Conrad quoted in the magazine. “I've spent the last five years making every decision be about the show. People I date have to be able to film, the places I work have to let us film and the places I live have to have set lighting. I'm ready to do things on my own. I loved doing it and had so much fun, but it came to a point where I had done it long enough." This interview really explains just how much reality TV can affect your life and decisions you make. I respect Conrad’s decision to leave the show, if you read more on what she said in her interview I believe that would have been a very tough life, so we may sometimes need to stop and think about what those reality television people have to deal with.

This week’s blog I have decided to talk about the cost of producing reality TV shows and also more information on the audiences of certain types of reality shows. Some shows can be quit costly to produce such as Paramount’s Entertainment Tonight. This show has one of the highest weekly budgets with an amount of $500,000 to $600,000 each week. The production cost usually tends to be on a lower budget with reality television shows based on crime and rescue series. These shows are usually anywhere from $150,000 to $250,000 dollars on a weekly basis. This becomes a big factor in Canada because we have both public and private broadcasters and have always depended on the inexpensive American showing schedules. People argue that reality shows are more eye-catching in countries outside of the United States. This may be in result of the other countries creating their own “Cheaper” reality television shows. Some examples of this would be the program “Battle Against Crime” which is produced in Canada and the higher end show of that is the Barbour-Langley’s Cops. Being able to roll the cameras just about on any location is cheaper in the end, there is no props needed to be bought everything is pretty much all there. Some shows can become a bit ridiculous such as Big Brother and the Bachelor/Bachelorette. These shows have very nice and expensive houses making the production of the show to increase very easily and quickly. The highest production cost I found was just under 2 million dollars with the show The Apprentice. Here is a link of listed reality television shows and their costs.
The audiences for reality television shows expectations are fit to the types of genders of the show such as males targeted at 18-49 are most likely interested in watching crime and rescue mean while woman ages 18-49 are more interested in tabloid shows. A good example of a tabloid show is Oprah Winfrey Show which is primarily aired during the day. The show America’s Funniest Home Video’s is a show that can be defined as a family show but it tends to grab men and children’s attention more than women’s.
And as you can see I believe that the costs and work put in to the production pays off for the result of the ratings. Hope you enjoyed reading about the production and costs of reality TV, I believe that its becoming a little too expensive, but hey when you make it all back it works back for your company right?

This week I decided to talk about the types of audiences and contestants of reality television shows that can be usually found.
Reality TV is a new development representing the creative side. The part that connects the entertainment and our audience has always shown the business side but reality is taking our people to a new level of entertainment. The types of audiences that are drawn to reality shows are the type that isn’t afraid of change and experimenting with new things.
There are many different types of reality sitcom contestants. The producers of these shows are looking for drama and things that will keep our audience interested. Rather than our producers telling us the types of people that are on the show we are expected to recognize the types that they present and about stereotypes. The reality TV producers are looking for some mixture of racial, ethnicity, sexual and gender diversity. Having these different types of qualities can also help our culture learn about different races and so on. This may be a positive thing about reality TV but may also result in a negative aspect. For an example, if there was a player of a different race doing something terrible then we may reflect our thoughts and feelings towards that race in a negative way because of what we seen on a television show. Also if may help our society not to have stereotypically people, like when we see a small woman doing a contest we automatically think she is weak but she may be the exact opposite. On such shows as the Bachelorette and the Bachelor it may bring woman’s self-confidence down because these handsome men and gorgeous women only go after good looking women and men. Survivor is a good example of expressing different types of ethnic groups and races. We need to be expressing different types of romances and thoughts of physical appearances to our society to show people that it isn’t always the prettiest girl or the most handsome man that are going to succeed in life.

This week I decided to write about a new sitcom that has come out. Sober House premiered on January 15th, 2009 which actually is a spin-off of Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew. These celebrities have already been involved with seasons 1 and 2 of Celebrity Rehab. There are only two more members of the house that have never been involved, there are 7 members living in the sober living house. Jennifer Gimenez is the house manager and who once was a runway model had been an addict but now has been sober for 2 and half years. Within several weeks their goal is to make a transition to a new improved life without the involvement of drugs. Putting these members in the house is suppose to make them start their live over by having curfews and every day chores, basically starting from the ground up in rebuilding their lives. Dr. Drew will still work with the addicts having one-on-one conversations and group activities. Full episodes of the Sober House are available on the internet.
There are many different celebrities getting into trouble with drugs and alcohol such as Lindsay Lohan, Ben Affleck, Micheal Jackson, Elton John, Nicole Ritchie, Britney Spears, Mel Gibson and Drew Barrymore are only a few of more popular celebrities that have been into rehab for their addictions. It almost seems like there has been more celebrities in rehab than the ones who haven’t. Oh and we can’t remember sweet little Stephanie Tanner from Full House who was having problems with addictions.
I think this show is going to be a wakeup call for many young adults today. By showing the “reality” of being on drugs and how bad the consequences can be by putting your life as risks is critical. From personal experiences I know a lot of friends that do drugs and I don’t think they realize how big of a problem it can end up being, especially not knowing exactly how much drugs you can take before overdosing. By watching this show you can learn so much and hopefully realize that drugs are a problem in our society and I hope that someday soon the drugs can all come to an end.

What actually makes us addicted to reality TV shows exactly? Is it the outrageous way the producers involve love, humor and emotions? We will never truly find out all the dirty deeds that these reality television producers come up with. Why? Well because the “real” in reality wouldn’t mean anything. Once you have signed a document for a reality show you have basically signed your life away. Reality TV shows have many secrets involved with their contest. You may then find yourself wondering how these contestants don’t release these scams the producers have put them through. But that’s simple, if the ex-contestants don’t have about 5 million dollars lying around then they are forced to keep their secrets to themselves.
There are many different secrets that reality TV does not announce about them, some good and others bad. I had found a website that shows a bunch of listed secrets. I will tell you about the ones I found interesting. On the show “Flip this house” one of the second season star, Sam Leccima didn’t even have a real estate license while the show was being filmed it had been taken away for proposing bad business deals. “What Not to Wear” doesn’t actually throw the participants clothes out in the garbage but donates the reasonable clothing to New York Charities. The audiences from Maury are all mostly actors and actresses so when you see someone acting absurd usually they are the “fake” guests.
The background checks involved with reality television could be easily classified as a joke. At one instant a contestant in 2001’s Big Brother had a knife held up to her throat by another cast member. In that case the member that had the knife had previously been arrested for assault and theft charges. The case was later dealt with the court.

Just a quick refreshment, I’m blogging about reality television shows which are a humorous or dramatic situations based that are unscripted. I have recently discussed some of my favorite reality TV shows and some of the ones I dislike also I have talked about recent history of sitcoms.
American Idol has been ranked as the most popular reality TV show. I personally don’t mind watching American Idol. I would have to say my favorite episodes would be the first couple where there are the worst singers who seriously believe they are good! I also find it very interesting to see what Simon has to say for many people it is very rare to find Simon happy. I believe that American Idol is ranked most popular show because of the same reason I enjoy it, for the laughs and jokes. American Idol originally started off as just a spinoff of “Pop Idol” which originated in the U.K. which also featured Simon Cowell. This hit show has started many singing careers. American Idol then lead to a spinoff show called “American Juniors”.
http://www.tv.com/reality/genre/9/summary.html
Dancing with the stars is rated as the least popular reality television sitcom. Dancing with the stars is a show that pairs a celebrity up with a professional ballroom dancer. The competition is performed in front of an audience as well as the judges. The dancers are critiqued by both the judgers and viewers at home. The couples must perform different types of dances as well as having outrageously magnificent costumes. The show is currently in its seventh season. Celebrities that have been on the show in the past are Lance Bass, Brooke Burke, and Toni Braxton. ABC has full episodes you can watch of Dancing with the Stars. I have never really sat down and watched an episode of Dancing with the Stars but after the rating of popularity I don’t know if I will. It’s amazing how the media can affect simple things such as what we watch on TV.

History of Reality TV

PBS came out with “An American Family” in 1973 that had some affect and influence on MTV’s first reality sitcom called “The Real World” in 1992. In this show they took seven different people with different backgrounds and put them in the same house for seven months. The first reality show can be compared to “Big Brother” where they also get taped with their interactions towards each other. Survivor was the first actual show that had given reality TV a name. Reality TV has changed in many different ways. First off reality TV shows have drowned out any other shows with theirs. ABC, NBC, CBS and Fox are the main channels that have reality show times on. Reality TV shows have become much more graphic in aspects of sexuality. There are lots of different types of reality shows where there are random hookups between the contestants or even the whole show is based on sexual matter. Many of the older reality TV shows are still running today such as Cops, The Real World, Who wants to be a Millionaire, Survivor, American Idol and Influential, but Unsuccessful. I personally think that the show Survivor has been on far too long with too many seasons. I think that every season it just seems to be the same things over and over, causing it to become boring. More reality shows are coming out just becoming weirder and weirder. Reality TV shows have always been about people being glued to a TV while watching anonymous others do “Stupid” things. You will still find people doing things they couldn’t typically do if it wasn’t on TV. This genre that started many years ago may be causing problems for the near future. People are taking risks that could be very dangerous such as on Survivor or Fear Factor and for what? Money.

Introduction

Hello, my name is Brittney Robertson. I am from Brandon, Manitoba Canada. I am currently in my second semester here at Valley City State University as a freshman. I am earning my degree in elementary education and undecided on my minor. I earned a scholarship in softball here at VCSU.
You may find yourself wondering what exactly is the definition of a reality show? A reality show is a type of genre that is an unscripted with either humorous or dramatic situations. There are many shows that you might have not even known they were reality sitcoms. I sometimes find myself being sucked into the television when these dramatic reality shows come on but in other cases I find some of these shows absolutely ridiculous. A couple of my favorite reality shows are Jon and Kate plus 8, Extreme Make-over: Home Edition and the Hills.
Jon and Kate plus 8 show plays on the channel TLC. Jon and Kate Gosselin originally have a set of twins born in the year 2000 but four short years later sextuplets arrive. This show follows the Gosselin family around their everyday life experiences. I find it very interesting seeing the Gosselin family trying to cope with having eight children you can definitely see the difficulties with having that many children but they make best of what they can do. I also enjoy watching Extreme Make-over: Home Edition because I love watching people renovate houses and fix them up for a good cause. The things those families go through are horrible and heartbreaking and the types of lives they live are sad and to help them make their live better is amazing. The Hills is another show I tend to get sucked into, even though you know what is usually going to happen I still watch it. The Hills is a life-drama setting with “high-class” girls and new drama they are experiencing with their jobs or even other girls.
